Let’s get on the bus

The Doodlebops Together Forever Tour has shows in Saint John, Moncton and Fredericton. Chances are, if you are the parent of a young child in New Brunswick, you have Doodlebops tickets tucked into a drawer or stuck behind a fridge magnet.

Drawing on the success of the popular Canadian TV series, the high-energy live stage show from Koba Entertainment brings siblings Deedee, Rooney and Moe to the Maritimes for the first time. The cross-Canada tour that kicked off this week in Peterborough features a new cast, though you won’t be able to tell. They have the same makeup, eye-catching costumes and puffy pink, orange and blue wigs.

Carl Lenox, co-creator of the TV series and music director for the live show, said during a phone interview from his home in Elora Ont., that the audience can expect an exciting rock show.

“When you go, you will see a mosh pit fully made up of three- to five-year-olds,” he said jokingly. “It’s the greatest thing. It brings such joy to your heart to see all the little kids come up and sing and dance right up at the front of the stage.”

The Doodles, as Lenox fondly refers to them, will perform some new tunes and plenty of old favourites, including Get on The Bus. Other big hits include Wobbly Whoopsie, Queen for a Day, The Bird Song and Together Forever, a 2004 classic from the first season of the TV series.

Not to be outdone by the special effects and light displays at grown-up concerts, this tour boasts mega-screen projection technology, a modular, movable set and state-of-the-art lighting.

Patti Caplette, producer for Koba, describes it as a visual fiesta.

“The sophistication of our technology is very, very high. It’s seen-unseen. The technology is not large and ostentatious,” she said. “It’s subtle magic.”

Caplette said that while the television series is aimed at two- to four-year-olds, the stage version appeals to older brothers and sisters, parents and grandparents.

The Doodlebops are wildly popular, something Lenox attributes to their chemistry and the connection they have with fans.

“The Doodles really love performing, and it shows. You can tell. You can’t fool a child,” he said. “You can see that it’s honest and they really do enjoy performing. It’s a magical thing.”

Lenox, 51, who has also worked on the children’s series Rolie Polie Olie, the Babar and Pippi Longstocking films and a show called Marvin the Tap-Dancing Horse, said the great singing and dancing on The Doodlebops has helped the series become a fan favourite.

The TV show was born in 2003 when Cookie Jar Entertainment CEO Michael Hirsh called Lenox and told him he wanted to create a show about a rock band for kids.

“We just got together on his porch and hammered out some ideas, brought in some other members of the team and, before we knew it, we had a look and a feel and some names, and The Doodlebops were born.”

The series airs all over the world. The Toronto-based trio of pink, orange and blue rockers have appeared on the Today Show twice and sold out the WaMu Theater at Madison Square Garden three nights in a row, two years running, said Lenox.

Lenox revealed this week that the TV series is undergoing a major change. Season 4 of The Doodlebops, set to air in early 2010, will be animated instead of live-action.

“It’s great news,” said Lenox. “It’s just something that will give us a little more reach around the world.”

The three actors who play The Doodlebops on TV - Lisa Lennox as Deedee, Chad McNamara as Rooney and Jonathan Wexler as Moe - will provide the voices for the new cartoon, now in production.

Lenox is working on 52 new songs for the cartoon version of The Doodlebops, keeping with their themes of caring, sharing, co-operation and sticking together.

Lucky for him, he has creative consultants in his four grandchildren.

“When I have a song that I’m not sure about, all I have to do is play it for them and in 10 seconds you can tell. They either light right up and start jumping around and dancing or they just kind of go ‘I don’t know if I like that one Pop Pop,’ ” he said. “They can’t not be honest.”

The Doodlebops Together Forever tour will be at Saint John’s Imperial Theatre Feb. 18 and 19 at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., Moncton’s Capitol Theatre March 7 at 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., and The Playhouse in Fredericton March 8 at 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. and March 9 at 4 p.m. Tickets are $26.50. Many performances are sold out but new shows have been added, so check the box office for ticket availability.

Doodlebops bop into Oshawa for concert
Posted on 02/08/09 by Stephanie 11:00 PM 0 Comments

The Doodlebops are bringing their colourful rock show to Oshawa on Feb. 12.

The Together Forever Tour hits the General Motors Centre at 7 p.m. with a show for the whole family, said producer Patti Caplette.

The Doodlebops, Deedee, Rooney and Moe Doodle, have been entertaining pre-school children on TV, including CBC, for several years. This is their fourth tour.

“But this is their first cross-Canada tour that they’ve ever done,” Caplette said during a break preparing for the Peterborough show.

She said the show features original music by Carl Lennox, the music director, in the styles from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. There’s also dancing by the Doodlebop dancers, original sets and costumes and giant-screen technology.

“The Doodlebops are heralded as the worlds’ hottest rockin’ band for kids,” Caplette said.

“They’re going to put on an amazing rock show for kids. It’s everything you’d see in a rock show but tailored for kids.”

She added the entire family will enjoy the 7 p.m. show, which is 60 minutes with a 15-minute intermission.

Tickets for the show range from $20.50 to $25.50 and are available at the box office of the GM Centre, Mary and Athol streets, 1-877-436-8811 or www.generalmotorscentre.com.

Doodlebops: Together Forever Tour
Posted on 02/05/09 by Stephanie 1:17 PM 5 Comments

The Doodlebops: Together Forever Tour (which will hit 52 cities across Canada this Spring) kicked off yesterday in Peterborough, Ontario. Together Forever brings you the first look of the new Doodlebops cast:

As a lot of you already know - Lisa, Chad and Jon will NOT be playing the Doodles for this tour. Instead, auditions were held in Toronto and 3 new performers were found to take on the roles as Deedee, Rooney and Moe. The show has also been removed from Playhouse Disney’s morning line-up, but you can still catch it on Kids’ CBC. From what I understand, Lisa, Chad and Jon are still the main cast for television work. The news on the street is that they may be producing an animated Doodlebops series. I’ll post more on that when information is released.

Lisa, Chad and Jon have done an amazing job making the Doodlebops what they are today and have brought together so many people over the years, young and old. They will always be known as the original Doodles, but I hope everyone will give the new performers a chance - the Doodles live on! I’ll be on the lookout for videos from their upcoming shows to share with everyone. I know we are all curious to see if their skills and chemistry match up to our beloved trio. You will definitely want to hit up a concert this spring if you can - Chad McNamara joined the tour as a Choreographer/Assistant Director and has been working hard with the cast!

Now, I’m sure you’re asking “what is the future for DRM.net?” Rather than shutting down - because I’ve put countless hours and so much $$ into making this site what it is - I will welcome the new cast with open arms and continue to follow Lisa, Chad and Jon’s careers on here as well. Trust me, there will be more to come!

I attended the final Doodlebops LIVE! show in Fresno, CA back on October 5th, 2008. I’m going to wait a little longer before I post those pictures….since these are my final exclusive pictures as Lisa, Chad and Jon playing the Doodles. In the meantime, here are my pictures from the York, PA show I attended on September 6th, 2008:

Wordpress transfer
Posted on 12/08/08 by Stephanie 11:06 PM 3 Comments

Hey everyone!

With a lot of help from the lovely Suzanne, DeedeeRooneyMoe.net has been moved over to Wordpress. It was time for the site to go through this transformation, and I’m extremely happy with the outcome. I was encountering a few problems with Greymatter (the previous program used for updating) so it became a challenge for me to do updates. With this transfer, it will be much easier to keep the site updated. I’m still in the process of transferring content but for the most part, things are good to go. I’m excited to get started again! If you find any errors, please contact me ASAP and let me know.

Info about Columbus, Ohio show

For unspecified reasons, “Doodlebops Live!” a children’s music concert scheduled for Sunday at Lifestyle Communities Pavilion, 405 Neil Ave., has been canceled.

Refunds are available where tickets were purchased.

Contact the pavilion (www.promowestlive.com) or Ticketmaster (614-431-3600, www.ticketmaster.com).

Now, before rumors heat up…everyone is fine, I have the reason for the cancellation. The doodles have a show the day before in Oklahoma City, OK. Due to the distance and time, there is no way the crew, cast and equipment can make it to the Ohio in time.
