About the show:
CHRISTMAS ROCKS is a holiday feast. When you walk into a theatre for the performance of a new show and discover that you’ve stepped up to a buffet that includes the vocal dynamics of maritime legends Frank MacKay and Joey Kitson, the flying feet and fiddle of Stephanie Cadman, a talking turkey, a grumpy nun, and a real live Doodlebop, you begin to realize that this holiday meal is the one that all others will be measured against!
When Musical Director and co-creator, Don Fraser and I started talking about “next year’s show” the day after last year’s closed, we knew that CHRISTMAS ROCKS would have big stockings to fill. It had to include some of the expected elements that the CANADA ROCKS shows have featured, and it had to have something new; something surprising. We agreed that the show needed to have some rock ‘n roll, we learned that our audiences wanted more traditional holiday tunes and we ourselves insisted that the show had to have brass;musically and metaphorically! We wondered what we could do to ramp it up.
We thought about the things that people expect to see in a holiday show: Santa Claus, Baby Jesus, Rudolph etc.; and then considered some of the aspects of the holidays that aren’t often celebrated: the turkey who reluctantly gives up his life for Christmas Dinner, last year’s broken New Year’s resolutions, and the neglected Christmas Tree. We mixed these notions together with a sentimental appreciation of the old CBC-TV “Hinterland Who’s Who” spots and came up with this show, CHRISTMAS ROCKS, A WINTERLAND WHO’S WHO, a show that gives its audience all the things they expect and much more of the things they don’t.
CHRISTMAS ROCKS is a celebration of the traditional, the contemporary, the secular and the silly elements of the holiday season. It has all the Christmas goodies you want and none of the calories. Dig in!
