Chad McNamara was born in Ottawa, Ontairo, Canada and grew up in Nepean, later moving with his parents and older brother to Carleton Place. He started doing tap, jazz and ballet when he was a pre-teen, cutting his acting chops with The Company musical theatre troupe. There, the late artistic director Peter Evans encouraged his ambitions, and his mom allowed them to happen.
In May 2000, after six callbacks and his parents driving him to and forth to Toronto, Chad snagged a swing role right out of high school. Postponing his admission to the Universty of Toronto for an english specialty program, Chad moved to Toronto and toured with Mamma Mia – which involved learning nine different parts and filling them in as needed.
McNamara had just lost out on two important roles, including a near-miss in Toronto’s Hairspray, when a choreographer encouraged him to audition for The Doodlebops. Chad was chosen from more than 300 hopefuls to play Rooney and has had the joy and frustration of creating a character from scratch.
He never imagined the Doodlebops would become as popular as the group has and he’s been enjoying the ride.
